The table shows the proportion of respondents from a survey who drank soft drinks every day for seven days in the four countries of the United Kingdom.

Analyse the information into the number of parts/components. 

It also breaks down which soft drinks were drunk by the respondents.

Not including. 

Coca-Cola was the most popular soft drink in all of these countries except Scotland, where Irn-Bru was the most popular. 

To a large degree/extent. 

Of those 40%, 16% drank Coca-Cola, which was by far the most popular soft drink.

If x follows behind y, it means y is ahead of x. 

Fanta, Sprite and Irn-Bru followed behind at 7%, 5%, and 4%, respectively. 

Similar to “follow behind”. If x trails behind y, it means y is ahead of x. 

Pepsi, Fanta, and Sprite trailed behind at 7%, 6%, and 4%, respectively. 

The most popular item in the market. 

Coca-Cola was the market leader (at 20%) while Pepsi followed behind at 8%. 

To show a similar value or trend as another category. 

Northern Ireland had a similar distribution to England, albeit with fewer people reporting to drink soft drinks (39% compared to England’s 40%).

The same as saying “much more”. E.g. vastly more popular = much more popular.

Coca-Cola (at 18%) was vastly more popular than Sprite, Fanta, Pepsi, and Irn-Bru, which registered 7%, 6%, 5%, and 3%, respectively.
