The table gives information about the different types of soft drinks and the proportion of consumers who drank them daily over a week´s period in the 4 countries of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) in the year 2019.
Overall, in the year 2019, there were 5 different soft drink brand consumed in the United Kingdom: Coca-cola, Pepsi, Fanta, Sprite and Irn-Bru. Among these, Coca-cola was the most popular across the countries, with the exception of Irn-Bru which was the favourite in Scotland. While Scottish people drank the most number of soft drinks, citizens from Northern Ireland drank the least.
In most of the countries of the United Kingdom (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) ,Coca-cola became the most popular fizzy drink with percentages of 16%, 20% and 18%, respectively. Whereas in Scotland, Irn-Bru was the population´s first choice with a significant portion of 23%. By contrast, English and Irish people did not like Irn-Bru as much as Scottish people as it was the least popular soft drink being consumed. Finally, in Wales, Fanta was the least favorite which was drank by only 4% of the consumers.
Looking at the total percentage of drinkers, among the four countries of the United Kingdom, Scotland gained the spot for the largest proportion of people who drank soft drinks at 51% while Northern Ireland had the lowest percentage at 39%.

Oh, I missed to put the data for England´s and Northern Ireland´s consumption of Irn-Bru. 🙁 Honestly, I struggled to organize this table. I was confused which angle to take, in terms of comparing.
Yes, this is a particularly difficult task 1 graphic. It would be better to have England and Northern Ireland’s consumption, but it is not that big a problem. What is more problematic is that you haven’t mentioned Pepsi and Sprite in your body paragraphs.
I think I am still used to the habit of only writing the most noticeable data. Is it always the case that I write about each of the elements in the graph? It sounds like a dumb question but I ask anyway.:)
Yes, it’s pretty important for a 7+ in task 1. In fact, if you miss one of the categories, the examiner might give you a band 5 for Task Achievement. And for Band 9 (Task Achievement) it says “Clearly presents a fully developed response”. You can find the band descriptors here: https://www.ielts.org/-/media/pdfs/writing-band-descriptors-task-1.ashx?la=en
Wow. It´s an eye opener. As always, I thank you.
Very good answer. You have a clear structure and your introduction and overview are spot on.
To improve, you should write more about Pepsi and Sprite in your body paragraphs. You only mention them in your overview. Here are some slight grammar improvements.
1. “While Scottish people drank the most number of soft drinks”- “While Scottish people drank the most soft drinks”
2. “Scotland gained the spot for the largest proportion of people who drank soft drinks” – “Scotland gained the top spot for the largest proportion of people who drank soft drinks”
Thank you Eli.
You are right, I forgot to mention about Sprite and Pepsi. To clarify, is it..”While Scottish people drank the MOST HIGHEST of soft drinks…?
Ah, my mistake. It should be “While Scottish people drank the most soft drinks” or “While Scottish people drank the highest quantity of soft drinks”
I thought so too, that is why I asked. .)
