What do you like to do in your spare time?

Useful Language

I’m really into photography at the moment.

It allows me to exercise while spending time with my friends.

Lately, I’ve been spending more time learning Spanish.

I’ve been rock climbing twice a week for the last 6 months.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Well, my favourite thing to do in my free time is to go indoor climbing. I go climbing at least three times a week, and I’ve been rather obsessed with it for the last decade. One of the reasons I like climbing so much is that it’s good for your body and mind, but it’s also fun and sociable at the same time. I’ve met a lot of my best friends through climbing.

Comments

  1. My favourite way to spend my free time is playing football. I go to play football at least once every weekend. Saying that, I am really into playing football at the moment. One of the reasons I like playing football so much is that it’s good and relaxing for your body but it’s also fun and sociable at the same time. I’ve met lots of friends through this hobby.

    1. Your answer is largely good, but I would correct a small aspect of it for clarity. Here’s a corrected version:

“My favourite way to spend my free time is playing football. I get to play football at least once every weekend. That said, I am really into playing football at the moment. One of the reasons I enjoy it so much is that it’s good exercise and provides relaxation for my body while also being fun and sociable. I’ve met lots of friends through this hobby.”

Just a small adjustment: instead of “Saying that,” use “That said,” because it fits better in this context. This essentially means “despite that” or “however”, and is used to introduce a contrasting point. Keep practicing and good luck with your exam!

  2. Well, my favorite thing to do in my down town is to watch video episodes relating to cooking and I found it’s awesome to see chemical reaction while mixing various ingredients cooked together. In the past, I wasn’t used to cooking, however, my lifestyle has been changed after moving to Canada. I’m cooking dinner 6 days a week with different dishes and I have passionate with it for the last 6 months.
One of the reasons why i particularly enjoy cooking because I got a decent open plan kitchen at home, it’s equipped with all home appliances that I need for cooking. Moreover, it’s good for me to relax myself by keeping away from busiest things in mind while cooking.

    1. Your answer is good, but there are a few mistakes and areas for improvement. Here’s a corrected version:

“Well, my favorite thing to do in my downtime is to watch video episodes related to cooking. I find it awesome to see the chemical reactions that occur when various ingredients are cooked together. In the past, I wasn’t used to cooking. However, my lifestyle changed after moving to Canada. Now, I cook dinner six days a week, each time trying out different dishes. I’ve developed a passion for it over the last six months. One of the reasons why I particularly enjoy cooking is because I have a decent open plan kitchen at home. It’s equipped with all the appliances I need for cooking. Moreover, it’s a good way for me to relax and take my mind off the busier aspects of my life.”

Mistake 1: You wrote “my down town” instead of “my downtime”.
Mistake 2: The phrase “I found it’s awesome to see chemical reaction” wasn’t grammatically correct. A better phrase might be “I find it awesome to see the chemical reactions”.
Mistake 3: In the sentence “I have passionate with it for the last 6 months” it should be “I’ve developed a passion for it”.
Mistake 4: You should use “busier aspects” instead of “busiest things”.

  3. In my leisure time I am into cycling because I burn my calories and train my muscles so that I ride a bike every Saturday and Sunday. I’ve been doing cycling for 1 year so it is my favourite hobby.

    1. Your answer is good, but there are a couple of small mistakes. Here are my corrections:

“In my leisure time, I’m into cycling. I like it because it helps me burn calories and trains my muscles. So, I ride a bike every Saturday and Sunday. I’ve been cycling for a year, so it’s my favourite hobby.”

      Mistakes:

      1. Use a smooth transition after saying “I’m into cycling.” You can say, “I like it because…” to explain why you like cycling.
      2. Use “it” instead of “I” in “…burn calories and train my muscles”.
      3. I removed the “doing” in, “I’ve been doing cycling…” to make the sentence sound more natural. It’s more common to say, “I’ve been cycling for a year…”.
      Keep up the good work!

  4. Well, my favorite activity is running in my free time. I’ve been running almost for seven years. I also joined a running club six years ago. I met a lot of interesting people there and met with my wife. It allows me to relive from stress and socialize while running at the same time.

    1. Thanks for your answer. Your speaking response is quite clear and organized, but there are a few minor mistakes in your response. Here’s your corrected answer:

“Well, my favorite activity in my spare time is running. I’ve been running for almost seven years. I also joined a running club six years ago. I met a lot of interesting people there, including my wife. It allows me to relieve stress and socialize, all while I’m running.”

      Mistakes:
      1. “is running in my free time.” -> “in my spare time is running.” – This is to make sure that the activities you’re describing are what you like to do in your free time.
      2. “met with my wife” -> “including my wife” – In English, when you first meet someone, you “meet” them, not “meet with” them.
      3. “relive from stress” -> “relieve stress” – The correct term for reducing stress is “relieve,” not “relive.”

Well done overall and keep practicing!

  5. In my spare time, my favorite thing to do is learning how to cook new dishes on YouTube. It’s a way to express myself and discover different flavors and cooking styles, especially the culture behind cuisines from different countries. I love trying new recipes and challenging myself in the kitchen. It’s also a great way to relax and share delicious meals with family and friends

    1. It seems like you’ve provided a thorough and effective response to the question! Your answer is clear, well-structured, and demonstrates a good understanding of the English language. You may want to use contractions to sound more natural in spoken English, but this is a minor suggestion. For example, instead of “It is a way to express,” you could say “It’s a way to express.”

Regardless, I can’t see any major mistakes in your answer. Keep up the good work!

  6. Well, my favourite thing to do in my free time is to go visiting. I go visiting at least two to three times a week, and I’ve been rather obsessed with it for the last three decades. One of the reasons I like visiting so much is that it’s good for my mind. But it’s also happy and sociable at the same time. I’ve met a lot of my family members, relatives and friends through visiting.

    1. Your answer is generally good, but there is a slight confusion in its clarity. It’s not very clear who or where you are visiting. You could specify a bit more for the listener to understand better. Here’s a suggestion:

“Well, my favourite thing to do in my free time is to visit family and friends. I do this at least two to three times a week, and I’ve been rather obsessed with it for the last three decades. One of the reasons I enjoy this so much is that it’s good for my mind. It’s not only pleasurable but also a sociable activity. I’ve met a lot of my family members, relatives, and friends through these visits.”

Here, you have clearly stated who you are visiting, making the answer more precise and understandable.

  7. Well,my favourite thing that i like to do in my free time is enjoying the nature. There is a beautiful scenery just a few minutes away from our home.i like to go there whenever i am free sometimes its like 4 times a weekend and sometimes less.yeah thats it.

    1. Here’s a corrected version of your answer: “Well, my favourite thing that I like to do in my free time is enjoy the nature. There’s beautiful scenery just a few minutes away from our home. I like to go there whenever I’m free. Sometimes, it’s like 4 times a weekend, and sometimes less. Yeah, that’s it.”

You have a few errors in your original answer:

      1. Remember to put a space after every comma and period. This will help your sentences to be more readable.
      2. Your use of “enjoying” is slightly awkward. It should be “enjoy”.
      3. Be careful with the use of “its”. In the context of your answer, it should be “it’s” which is a contraction for “it is”.

Keep practicing and you’ll get it! Remember, correct and clear sentences are just as important as sharing your ideas in a speaking exam.

  8. I love to read story books in my free time. I read atleest three books a week. Even though I can’t access books I read through the online. I really admire this hobby because it gives me lots of wonderful ideas and allows me to think broader. I have been reading books since my childhood. My mom gave me a book for my 6th birthday until then I used to read books. In my opinion, rather than spending more time on social media it’s better to read books because it’s a healthier way to enhance our knowledge at the same time to prohibit our physical and mental health.

    1. Your answer is quite detailed and covers the topic well. However, there are a few grammatical mistakes and awkward phrasings that need correction. Here’s a revised version:

“I love to read story books in my spare time. I read at least three books a week. Even when I can’t access physical books, I read online. I really admire this hobby because it gives me lots of wonderful ideas and allows me to think more broadly. I’ve been reading books since childhood. My mom gave me my first book on my 6th birthday, and I’ve been reading ever since. In my opinion, rather than spending a lot of time on social media, it’s better to read books because it’s a healthier way to enhance our knowledge and at the same time protect our physical and mental health.”

      I’ve spotted three mistakes:

      1. “atleest” is not correctly spelled. It should be “at least”.
      2. When you say “until then I used to read books”, it implies that you stopped reading after your 6th birthday. I switched it to, “and I’ve been reading ever since” to make your point clearer.
      3. The phrase “to prohibit our physical and mental health” can be confusing. The word “prohibit” means to prevent or forbid something. So, I’ve replaced this with “protect”, which conveys what you probably meant more accurately.

Keep practicing, and you’ll improve gradually!

  9. There are many things I can do in my free time, such as watching educational documentaries in which I can learn something new about the world, learning a new language to expand knowledge and another thing I enjoy doing is walking in nature to improve my health.

    1. Your answer is very good, I can’t see any mistakes in your answer. You did a great job of providing specific examples of what you do in your spare time, which is excellent for your IELTS speaking score. This part – “watching educational documentaries in which I can learn something new about the world” – is particularly well-constructed. Keep up the good work!

  10. Well, I used to spend the majority of my free time reading books—a lot of books, actually. That was the brightest time of my life. Reading books allows you to learn about other cultures and gain experience by discovering new ideas and perspectives from seasoned individuals who have already lived through these experiences. In other words, you can imagine yourself as someone strolling through a garden, smelling different flowers, but only picking the ones whose scent you like.

Lately, I barely read because I’ve directed my interest toward learning other skills that I need to enhance my abilities and improve my career. Skills like learning English, programming, and similar fields.

    1. Your answer is quite good! You’ve provided a detailed response, used great metaphors, and explained your point clearly. There is just one minor correction with a preposition.

Here’s the corrected version: “Well, I used to spend the majority of my free time reading books—a lot of books, actually. That was the brightest time of my life. Reading books allows you to learn about other cultures and gain experience by discovering new ideas and perspectives from seasoned individuals who have already lived through these experiences. In other words, you can imagine yourself as someone strolling through a garden, smelling different flowers, but only picking the ones whose scents you like. Lately, I barely read because I’ve directed my interest towards learning other skills that I need to enhance my abilities and improve my career. Skills like learning English, programming, and similar fields.”

      Keep up the good work!
