A fraction of the population holds a notion that alcohol is a drug and has to be considered unlawful. I favour the argument of these folks as alcohol is an abusive substance and can lead to criminal offences once ingested in larger quantities.
Firstly, alcohol is a chemical substance that can alter the physical and biochemical components of living organisms. Ingestion of any type of beverages that included alcohol content can induce tolerance to the amount taken first, which leads to increasing the dose of uptaking. As a result, they will lead to addiction and will not be able to live without consuming a certain level of alcohol each day. Further, unavailability of the substance will result in a withdrawal status that is presented by mental disorientation and physical symptoms like vomiting and seizures. On long term use of alcohol, it can cause several diseases such as liver cirrhosis and cancer, which results in death.
Considering the legal part of ingesting alcohol, there are many laws prohibiting the use such as during driving as it is considered to cause harm to themself and others due to its sedative action. Several domestic violence and criminal cases are been recorded as a result of excess usage of alcohol. Recently a news reported that the increased number of anti-social activities are due to the uncontrolled use of alcohol by the youth.
Considering the side effects of alcohol consumption and the probability of this use causes disturbance in society, I strongly agree with the statement that alcohol is a drug and should be legally prohibited.
